Independent solar system means the power only comes from solar panels. In the daytime with sunlight, the solar panels will power the loads and charge the battery; when the sunlight is inadequate or on cloudy days, the battery will power the loads together with the solar panels; In the night, the battery will power the loads independently until the next sunny day comes. 

If the battery bank cannot stand to the next sunny day, the system will cut off the power when the battery reaches its maximum discharging capacity. 

When the load power is confirmed, the number and probability of consecutive cloudy and rainy days for local region should be taken into consideration to determine battery maximum powering time and how long  it needs to fully charge the battery, then, finalize the configuration based on these conditions.

Besides the factors concerned for independent solar systems,the local average wind speed and wind distribution should be taken into consideration when designing solar-wind hybrid power supply systems.

The disadvantage for wind power system is that the reliability of mechanical equipment is not good and maintenance cost is high.

Solar-diesel generator hybrid system can resist the rainy days and power the loads consistently all the year, is the best solution for solar power systems when rainy days.

when battery voltage goes down to the set value. the controllerwill start the diesel generator automatically, when the battery is charged to the set value, the controller will turn off the diesel generator automatically.

Solar-diesel generator hybrid system can reduce the working time of diesel generator under light loads and the consumption of fuel and failure rates of diesel generator to improve the working efficiency of diesel generator and reliability of systems.

1. Description of system

Solar-wind-diesel generator hybrid power system consists of solar panels, wind turbine, low-voltage diesel generator, MPPT solar&diesel generator controller, wind controller and battery.

The system is designed as per the following index. The battery can power the loads for consecutive 60 hours and can be fully charged within 3 consecutive sunny days in winter season. The diesel generator will start automatically to power the loads and charge the battery when the battery voltage goes down to the set value. The estimated starting times for diesel generator in the whole year is not more than 5 times and the working time for each time is not more than 3 hours in order to ensure the lifespan of diesel generator and reduce the fuel consumption.

Among the system, the power of solar panels is more than load power, solar energy is preferred to power the loads,  when solar energy is inadequate, the grid will power the loads, If the grid is power failure, the battery will power the loads, when the gid power is available, the controller will start the grid power to charge the battery.
